What is Auto-Flushing?
When discussing lead remediation strategies, many solutions are thrown into the mix: service line replacement, filtration, reverse osmosis, auto-flushing, etc. It’s important to understand what each of these options offers, how each works, and its pros and cons. Auto-flushing is a process in which a sensor or device releases stagnant water at a fixed interval. Stagnation is one of the key causes of lead leaching into water because when water stops moving, the pipes are more likely to corrode, causing the lead in the pipes or faucets to be dissolved into drinking water. In places where auto-flushing is not available, manual flushing is recommended, requiring tenants or landowners to open faucets and determine if the flushing process is complete by gauging water temperature changes. However, the amount of time manual flushing takes is variable; in some cases, it could take a couple of minutes, in others, over ten minutes [1]. Due to the variability of manual flushing, it is not only hard to monitor, but also sometimes inefficient.
The limitations of manual flushing are largely resolved by auto-flushing. The variability is greatly reduced, as a device can be set to release water on the predetermined schedule for a given building; you no longer have to wait and monitor a flushing sequence yourself; and there is more certainty that stagnant water has been removed. In addition, implementation can be relatively easy. Products can be attached to existing fixtures and require little maintenance. Other solutions, like service line replacements, may take years to reach completion, whereas auto-flushing devices can be installed in one day.
While the positives of auto-flushing are clear, the negative side must also be examined. The main issue with auto-flushing is that it can waste water. When on a regular flushing schedule, water that could be used for other purposes is released as wastewater. While this water may not be safe to drink, it could be used in other ways, such as watering plants. Moving forward, advances must be made to improve the sustainability of auto-flushing systems. However, it is important to remember that the recommended alternative is manual flushing, which can also waste water if done improperly.
Auto-flushing is emerging as a leading solution to stagnation, one of the major causes of lead contamination. By removing the variability and effort of manual flushing, auto-flushing systems provide a convenient replacement for the existing process. While there are concerns about water waste and sustainability, auto-flushing is still a developing technology, so these concerns can still be addressed in the future. When considering other long-term lead remediation strategies, it is important to remember that auto-flushing is both a practical and available solution that can be implemented immediately, making it an important step toward providing safer, lead-free drinking water.
